Training Opportunities
Training:
We encourage all practitioners to take advantage of training opportunities. The Georgia Forestry Commission’s Prescribed Burn Manager Certification is highly recommended. This course is offered to all practitioners and individuals, providing comprehensive instruction on subjects such as fire behavior, fire weather, and fire tactics. To become a certified prescribed burner in Georgia, one must pass a written test and meet a prerequisite of having been in charge of five prescribed burns.
Organizations and partnerships offer unique training opportunities on fire, such as Landowner Workshops, Learn and Burns, Live Fire Demonstrations, and Field Trips. Some examples include the Chattahoochee Fall Line Prescribed Fire Cooperative and The Longleaf Alliance.
The Academy was designed for private landowners and managers, with online materials and assignments that provide the flexibility to balance other responsibilities. These resources familiarize students with prescribed fire concepts from state Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Programs, the Guidebook to Prescribed Burning in the Southern Region, and Tall Timbers research and staff experience.
We encourage you to enroll in the Academy and welcome your feedback on this inaugural launch, as we will use your input to inform the second offering in Summer of 2026.
